Victor Mugabe Wanyam can now rest easy after the Scottish Football Association gave the go ahead for his issuance with a Work Permit. This followed an application for his new club, Celtic, to the Appeals Panel after Mugabe had earlier ran afoul Kenya falling out of the top 70 in FIFA rankings.

A statement from the Scottish Football Association was posted in the Telegraph and said:

“Following an appeal by Celtic FC on behalf of Victor Wanyama, the Scottish FA has today issued the club with a Governing Body Endorsement. The player must now complete his work permit application with the UK Border Agency.”

We wish you well Mugabe.

Several months back, Mcdonald Mariga`s big money move to Manchester City fell through due to the failure of Manchester City to obtain a work permit for him. This was due to the provision the fact that Kenya was never in top 70 of the FIFA rankings. Since that time Kenya has fared even worse and is now positioned at rank 130.

It is this obstacle that Mariga`s brother now faces as his €1.1 Million transfer to Celtic hangs in the balance. However his soon to be new club is expressing confidence that they shall convince the appeal panel of the special circumstances in respect of Victor Mugabe as to allow for his issuance with a work permit.

The five of us were as tight a fit at could be in the unofficial match day sedan as we crawled our way to the City Stadium. The five comprised the four un-named buddies and I. I am Remb Gor. I follow my team and I write about it. The former religiously the latter as I deem fit. I am the blood of my team. My team? Obvious. Gor Mahia.

Being my first post at the home of Kenyan football, a few pointers are in order. This is not a match report. This is a rambling on my team, the colourful and not so colourful people that follow it and anything that may actually strike my fancy.

We arrived at the City Stadium, where Gor Mahia were to take on and dispose of the not so mighty Red Berets in this Kenya Premier League afternoon fixture. The Board outside the Stadium misinformed the whole world that the football match that was to start at 3 pm and actually started thereabouts was fixed for 3:30 pm.

Our arrival was characteristically greeted by a man who was doing several laps and hoops just outside the stadium as the alien juice he had definitely imbibed took over the control of his faculties and limbs.

Despite the harsh realities of our economy the Kshs. 200 ensured admission to the main stand while the Russia Stand welcomed the fans who were only able to pay half that amount. Not that it made that much difference as all but a handful of the fans migrated from Russia to the main stand during the half time period. A fact induced in large part by the on and off afternoon drizzle.

The three goals scored by Gor Mahia with no reply were welcome but they were merely the icing on the cake. For the uninitiated, in as much as Gor Mahia fans enjoy winning games, they expect first and foremost for their team to play good and attractive football and the players did not fail on that respect.

Of special mention on the match were firstly, Esau Wekesa; the marauding full back whose inch perfect cross (after being cleverly released on the left wing by the youthful George Odhiambo) set up the first goal.

Then there is Ibrahim Kitawi; the midfielder with an exceptionally eye for the pass and full of tricks with quick feet to match his football intelligence. The pass and set up for the third goal was merely more noticeable of his general game and passes due to the cool finish by Baldwin Ngwa the Cameroonian import.

And then there was George Odhiambo; the youthful striker with burning pace and surprising close control.

The match unfortunately came to an end with the referee, who had a torrid game, blowing the final whistle in obvious relief and the Gor Mahia fans swarming onto the pitch to congratulate the players and prance a bit with the AFC Leopards Isikuti contingent that had turned up to support Gor Mahia just as Gor Mahia fans had supported them the previous day against Mathare United. A surprising coming together until you realise that Gor Mahia had wanted Mathare United to lose just as much as AFC Leopards had wanted Red Berets to lose for obvious selfish reasons. The former to contain the embers of the fire for a Championship while the latter as a step towards not going back to the dark worlds of the lower leagues from which they came back this season.

An afternoon well spent but with a bittersweet ending. A victorious result with the news filtering in of Sofapaka losing 2-1 to Nairobi City Stars in another Kenyaa Premier League fixture on one hand and rumours of the players not having been paid their salaries for at least five months on the other.

Well. Still. Gor Biro!! Yawne Yo!

This may be unpopular here but those blaming Antoine Hey for the now looming and almost inevitable failure of the Harambee Stars to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, 2010 miss the point. The Kenyan national team has only been able to obtain any point in the qualifiers by some miracle as it is.

The disorganization starting from the picking of players for the national team to the disorganized running of Kenya’s Football Association – the ineptly named Football Kenya Limited has meant that even with ‘the best coach in the world’, wherever he is, Kenya would not amount any credible challenge to any team.

Now we are all reduced to the embarrassing pontification of Hey that all we need is one point to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Angola.
